Major Change to Street Parking

Postby bigrock » Tue Apr 28, 2009 3:46 pm

Major Change to Street Parking Today

The city has placed no parking signs on 162 Ave. and 24th St. (both sides) today April 28. The entire street area that boundaries our property is now a No Parking zone.

The board wants to make clear to all residents that we were not consulted or even informed by the city about this change. Had we been consulted we would have likely vigorously opposed this change.

Should you wish to express your displeasure with this change you should call or email your Alderman (we are in Ward 13).

Please be aware that the Visitor Parking Policy of this complex remains in effect and will be enforced.

162 and 24 is slated to be a major intersection a block away from a future ring road. Take a look at similar intersections around the city. Anyone expecting to have parking there in the long run doesn't see the long term picture. Too bad so sad. I'd imagine once BRT or LRT come to that grass area the boulevard on 162 will be a bus stop area.

I asked to have that intersection a 4 way stop because you can't see past the people parking on the road at your building and the intersection wider than usual to accomodate the future LRT station. I wasn't the one asking for the no parking zone though, figured that'd come soon enough without anyone's assistance even with the 4 way stop helping out. It would be nice to see more intersections having larger no parking zones the way people drive in this city anyway.

Gripe all ye who wish, just means you didn't do enough research when you bought into the area.

Oh baloney the ring road is 5 years away, maybe more. And if there is lights put in, one side is a dead end road what a waste of money. The city has already been out there issuing tons of tickets - what a cash grab without warning. Everyone should call the Ward 13 alderman and let her know what you think of this.

WELL wouldn't want to encroach on your PRECIOUS visitor parking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get over the visitor parking....

As far as I'm concerned, the condo board is USELESS and obviously can only continue pestering and whining about insignificant issues

The condo board isn't useless. I think we have a very good board that puts in a lot of effort, and I for one appreciate all the work they do. I wish I had time to join them. The biggest problem around here is apathetic residents who don't lift finger one to help out but complain like little children when things don't go there way.

I sure all the board would be happy to get over Visitor Parking as you say if everyone would stop complaining about it being full all the time or the same person is there so many nights in a row or 14 other things. We all got better things to worry about then that.

And the city controls what goes on out on the street not us. Call your alderman and complain, that's the only hope of some action here. I hope everyone ticketed on the street tonight calls the alderman and demands to know why they are being ticketed a few hours after the signs went up and without any notice whatsoever to the area, our residents, or your board.

What goes on the street does not change anything in our lot, we are not getting any more parking spots ever, we are stuck with having too few like pretty much every condo in the city so we have to live with that.

I have a neighbor who is away at this time. How fair is it that he's ticketed without any warning?

It's not fair at all, it's actually ridiculous. I would suspect they might be able to dispute that in court if they want to try that route.

I did talk to the Calgary Parking Authority yesterday to find out what was going on. It seemed to me quite excessive to be ticketing people already parked there before the signs went up yesterday. What I gathered from them it was just a concidence that one of their patrol cars happened to go by here at the just the wrong time and ticketed as they normally would. I doubt they had any idea the signs had just gone up which does create an oppurtunity to possibly challenge the tickets if anyone wants to go to that hassle.

That argument won't work anymore however, the signs are up now and apply 7-24 so anyone parking there now should expect to be ticketed and have no recourse. Our only hope no is get some of these are pulled back from what seems like an excessively large no parking zone, and the only avenue to do that is to complain to the Alderman.

We are in Ward 13 and our Alderman is Diane Colley-Urquhart and the phone number is 403-268-2430. Her executive assistant's number is 403-268-1624 (which might be a better bet). Email is dcolley@calgary.ca. Contact her today if you are mad about this.

I had already been in contact with the Alderman's office when only the posts for the signs were up and basically one of her aids passed my message off to a city roads person who promptly ignored me. You can bet they will be hearing back from me today about the signs and the ridiculous ticket I received. We also tried calling 311 to find out what was going on but they were equally useless. I can't even begin to explain how annoyed (not my first choice of word, but seeing as this is a public forum...) I am about this; or most of the other decisions that have come out of city council lately. Please people email and phone our alderman even if you don't park on the street regularly. Tell her how absurd this no parking zone is and also let her know that the way the city went about it - with zero consultation or even notification. Also tell her what you think about the CPA's actions (I don't buy it for a second that a car just "happened" to be passing by). And don't stop at one message; we need to keep this up until the signs come down.

On another note, does anyone have any idea on where to park now?

mrsp is Obviously someone who knows squat about what the board actually does for the comunity or the hours of work put in by the members on his/her behalf to make this a better place to live.
If the board is so "useless" -- volunteer some of your time -- join the board for next year - tell the board where they are going wrong - you sound like the type of person that could really set things straight around here. Let the board know the important issues that aren't being looked after. Not that I believe, for even one minute, you know what issues are being looked after by the board (except of course parking)

People, stop yelling at each other for one minute and direct your attention somewhere that might actually make a difference. Contact your Alderman!!! Like Bigrock said:

As for where to park. I think the only option is in front of the field across from the school.

In the end the city is to blame for allowing developments all over the place to proceed with insufficent on site parking. We would need at least 30+ more stalls to accomodate all the cars and we know that is never going to happen (maybe when everyone drives a George Jetson electric mini car).

I emailed the alderman again this morning. There needs to be a blizzard of complaints into the aldermanic office if this silly no parking zone crap is to be reversed.

You are 100% right. It really seems like they were handing out building permits to anyone regardless of what they wanted to build 5 or 6 years ago.

Some new developments. I'm happy to report I have heard back from the alderman and they are taking some action:

1. Parking has told them all the tickets issued yesterday will be cancelled and they will be contacting the vehicle owners to tell them this.

2. There are waiting to her from the Roads department as to the justification for these no parking zones. Early indications where due to the amount of traffic but a more definitive answer will be forthcoming.

Stay tuned to this forum for more developments.

Good to hear. I haven't hear anything back myself, but it is good to know they are aware of the situation. As for banning parking due to traffic levels, what a farce. They might want to take a close look at some of the downtown streets and the traffic to parking ratio...oh wait, they make a ton of money from parking down there so that makes it all better.

Please keep us posted if you hear any more and I will do the same.
